May 01, 2004 MOMPOU: Piano Pieces / Adolf Pla--LMG 2050--69 minutes
Combining Spanish sultriness and French perfume, the piano works of Federico Mompou have a languid poetry in Cants Magics and child-like purity in Scenes d'Enfants. A minor composer Mompou may be, but he is hard to resist. The notes quote him as saying "it is important to study the quality of the sound that lies between the notes". He also believes that playing "note by note" rather than "phrase by phrase" gets to "the secret font of emotion".
Adolf Pla enacts this philosophy in performances of exceptional care, probity, and intimacy, aided by round, rich piano sound. Margaret Barela admired Anita Pontremoli's recent Mompou album on Centaur (J/F 2003) but wished for more "contrast" and less grayness. Although subtlety is his forte, Pla offers plenty of tonal variety within Mompou's supremely civilized limitations. He has a seductive gentleness just right for this aesthetic.
He has developed and performed interdisciplinary artistic productions with great success of public and critic. The production “Mompou” has been performed in 18 countries and at this moment is on tour through Europe.
Review of the artistic production “The sound of light, Gaudí and Mompou” – Gabriela Dumay, Mexico 2007
(…) A new proposal of a “sonorous” exhibition and a visual concert…, a wonderful expression from Barcelona, with love.

CANTS MAGICS
Magic songs gives us a magical atmosphere. Reality and un reality go together. The contraries make up the Unity in harmony. As the indications of the score: energy-calm, , near-far…
SCENES D’ENFANTS
Children Scenes We will listen and see the Mediterranean light through the children play. The piano sound of Mompou is the light of Mediterranean sea. This light and its colours are given to us innocence and simplicity.
CHARMES
Next work Charmes are six short pieces which to invoke a spiritual subjects like the primitive music. “To be original ti means to go to the origin, the beginning”. The Mompou art come from the most original tradition, the primitive tradition. The materials, the rhythms and the structure of this music are a way to begin again..
MÚSICA CALLADA (2nd cahier)
After see Barcelona , magical means, Mediterranean light and primitive art, Mompou shows us their great and sublime spiritual magnitude. The most important Mompou work is Música callada (Music in silence… been quiet). This name is choose from a poem by the Spanish mystic of the XVI Century San Juan de la Cruz . This music is a kind of meditation.
“I invite you to meditate all together!”
